Hungry? Grab a snack bar. There're many to choose from to appeal to everybody.
We've been conditioned since the days when we think a candy bar (or two) made up the perfect meal, to eat sweet bars when we're hungry especially between meals. Thus, snack bars are an important part of the typical American diet and lifestyle.
Many critics would say that's why typical Americans are overweight and getting unhealthier than ever before. In a way, that's true. It'd be better for us all if we had the time and money to eat delicious home-cooked meals at least twice a day, sitting down with our families and sharing tales of the day.
But that's just not reality, and that's not going to change. We work harder and longer. Our kids are involved in a thousand after-school activities and sports.
Plus, there's finding the time to do things we know we need to do for better health, such as sports, exercise and going to the gym. Many people are going to classes for yoga, pilates, qi gong and tai chi.
How did we ever find the time to sit down and eat dinners with our families when we were children? I can't figure it out.
Besides, many commercial snack bars are not just candy bars. They know people want something healthier.
Many are designed to help people lose weight. They're low in calories. High in protein. They're zone-balanced for people on the 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein 30% fat Zone diet. They have granola and whey and soy proteins. They're packed with vitamins and minerals and Omega-3 oils.
They're also designed to help bodybuilders and weight lifters pack on bigger muscles to get the most out of their workouts and to keep up their intense nutrition between work out days.
Some of them include:

Element Bars lets you build or design your own snack bars. You decide whether you want the core to be chewy, oaty, crispy or datey. Then you choose the fruits you want: apricots, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, prunes or raisins. Then you choose your nuts: almonds, cashews, flaxseeds, peanuts, soynuts, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. And the sweets: agave syrup, brown rice syprup, honey, maple syrup, chocolate chips, Sundrops or pumpkin spice.
Finish up with what they call "boosts" -- whey protein, soy protein, omega-3, immunity and fiber.
You can then name the bar after yourself. That's a fun idea.
There's a chart to the side that apparently can compute the nutritional information they're required to show you, after you choose your combinations.
