Zoneperfect Bars Support Your Zone Diet They're not ideal, but Zone Perfect bars are for many people an essential way to remain in the Zone as described by Dr. Barry Sears throughout our hectic daily lifestyles.

Let's get this straight. "ZonePerfect" is technically a brand name of 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbohydrate proportioned bars in line with the Zone diet described by Dr. Barry Sears in his books on the subject. It's owned by Abbott Laboratories. "Balance" is a technically a brand name of bars that also follow Dr. Sears' guidelines. It's owned by The Balance Bar Company. The line owned by Barry Sears is called Dr. Sears Zone Nutrition Bars. Plus there are Carbwell bars.

However, in practice I use the terms balance bar, zone bar, zoneperfect bar, sears bar and so on interchangeably.

In January 2004 I read THE ANTI-AGING ZONE by Barry Sears and became convinced to go on the Zone diet. Not totally. But enough to start losing weight. And I began a habit of eating lots of balance bars, because I was rarely at home thanks to working two jobs.

In about four months, people started asking me how I was losing weight. I'm not sure if they believed me. And of course as soon as I mentioned cutting out carbohydrate foods such as bread and potatoes, everybody said that wasn't possible. They'd rather remain overweight.

The office "hippie" remarked that she couldn't give up whole grains bread. I remember how I thought I was doing something so healthy for my body when I ate whole wheat bread, but it still too many carbohydrates.

Of course, if you insist on eating bread at all, it should be whole wheat so at least you do get more vitamins and fiber than you do from white bread with its processed flour.

And I noticed that the extreme sleepiness I used to feel late in the day went away. I wasn't even eating the huge amounts of carbs for lunch that Dr. Sears often mentions, but I still felt that severe carb downer every day about 4:00 every afternoon. It made driving away from work every day quite difficult.

Unfortunately, I fell into an easy pattern where I relied on Zone bars for more of my busy day, but didn't exercise and didn't keep my entire diet as strict as I should have.

While suffering a bout of pneumonia early in 2008, I gave in to temptation. I back slid by eating a Quizno's sub washed down with a large soda, the first I'd drunk in two years.

Fortunately, I'd already determined to stop my downward spiral toward an inevitable diabetis, stroke, heart attack or cancer.

I went downhill from there, partly from personal problems that made me too depressed to care much. I began eating more and more fast foods. In the past two years I'd eaten at Taco Bell and McDonalds -- which is allowed -- but limited the carbs. I'd eat a quarter pounder with cheese with only one bun. I'd order three gordita supremes and shovel the contents of two of them into the wrapper of the third. And I drank only water.

But from early 2008 through June 30 I began eating whatever fast food I wanted -- including a Quiznos sub once a week -- and drinking down a large Dr. Pepper or Mr Pibb, my favorites.

As time went on, I simply ate what I wanted and stopped exercising due to lack of time.

I've read or re-read all of the books by Dr. Sears -- THE ZONE, MASTERING THE ZONE, THE SOY ZONE, THE ANTI-INFLAMMATION ZONE, THE AGE-FREE ZONE, THE 0MEGA RX ZONE, and the latest, Toxic Fat: When Good Fat Turns Bad.

So in the past four months I've lost about 26 pounds and five inches off my waist. I have a long way to go, but eating zone perfect bars has been part of my success.

Some celebrities who've been on the Zone diet include Renee Zellweger, Cindy Crawford, Charlie Sheen and Jennifer Anniston.

ZonePerfect has put a lot of effort into putting out a line that tastes good. I think they've succeeded in making balance bars as tasty as candy bars.

Recently ZonePerfect has come out with a new line called Indulgence Nutrition Squares.
